The VA Speed Trap

The VA Speed Trap: When Clients Take the Slow Lane

The VA Speed Trap. High-ticket clients, low-speed results? It happens. It’s a challenge when you’re working with a client who doesn’t share the same sense of urgency.

If you’re like me—efficient, fast-paced, and accustomed to delivering results at lightning speed—you might find it tough to adapt when a client asks for a slower approach.

As a VA, you expect to work with clients who are committed to efficiency and achieving results as quickly as possible.

But what happens when your client wants to take it slow?

This is exactly what I’ve recently found myself grappling with.

The VA Speed Trap

Here I am, working with a high-value client who trusts me implicitly, but their approach to work couldn’t be more different from mine.

They prefer to tackle one project at a time, with limited communication and minimal updates.

They don’t like frequent emails—something that I rely on to ensure my work stays efficient and on track.

“Sometimes it can feel like you’re driving through setting concrete.”

At first, I found myself getting frustrated. How could I help a client who’s paying well but seems to be dragging their feet?

Why couldn’t we just get things done and move forward?

The VA Speed Trap - Realisation

The Realisation

Eventually, I had to face the reality: this client needs a different pace.

They’re not slow—they just work at a different speed, and they might be overwhelmed with too many things on their plate. Perhaps it’s a strategic pause, a need for meticulous review, or simply a different rhythm of working. Understanding the why behind their pace is key.

Example: A simple email response took a week, but the resulting strategy was a game-changer.

Shifting Gears

This is where patience became my biggest challenge.

If I wanted to deliver the best for them, I had to adapt.

I’ve had to learn to be okay with baby steps, and while it’s not comfortable for me, it’s what they need.

The quality of the work remains my top priority, and sometimes, slower and more deliberate steps lead to better results in the long run.

“But it’s their road, they’re paying for the journey, and they’re paying for the fuel. You have to learn to be the passenger!”

Final Thoughts

If you’re in a situation like this, take a deep breath and accept that not all clients work the same way.

As a VA, your ability to shift gears and meet clients where they are is what sets you apart. It’s not just about money—it’s about delivering excellence, no matter the speed or route.

Flexibility isn’t just a skill—it’s a strategic advantage.

Embrace your client’s pace, and you’ll build stronger, more enduring partnerships—sometimes by simply being the passenger.

Need a VA who thrives in both fast and slow lanes? Let’s talk. Whether you’re a sprinter or a marathon runner, I’ll help you avoid The VA Speed Trap and cross the finish line with exceptional results.
